Create a job to keep a job

To protect your future regardless of the bad economy and the raising unemployment and to secure your financial freedom, you should create your own opportunities.

This ‘resume-driven society’ says if we go to uni and work hard, we will be just fine but the question is for how long and what comes next? Reality can be nasty sometimes. You can easily lose your job one day so it’s better to be ready because this traditional thinking no longer applies.

If you have a traditional 9–5 job you are putting all your eggs into one basket that you don’t own. The minimum should be to hold some of those eggs close to you.

To secure your own financial future, you need to be in control of your own life.

Ultimately I believe the only way to secure your employment and financial future is to start your own business or buy an existing one. In most cases, buying an existing business is less risky than starting from scratch but both types have their own advantages and disadvantages.

When you buy a business, you take over an operation that’s already generating cash flow and profits. On the downside buying a business is much more costly than building up something from scratch.

It doesn’t mean it’s an easy way to be an entrepreneur but what’s easy in life? At least no one tells you what & how to do plus you can create your own destiny. According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months but doesn’t matter how many times you failed in your past, we all do mistakes, you need to put all the bad days behind you and fight your way through to win this game. Today is, fortunately, a time when out-of-the-box ideas are supported instead of being rejected.

It is never too late to start a personal endeavour, doesn’t matter if you have a full time job or not, just create something before it’s too late and you will regret it.

In fact 80% of workers dissatisfied with their job and you don’t want to belong to this group. Most people are dreaming of being their own boss, setting their own hours. So find your passion and build your business around it!

Here are a few questions which I think worth to think it over before you start anything:

  • What are you ridiculously good at? What are your precious gifts?
  • When was the last time you massively over delivered on something? What was it and why did you work so damn hard?
  • When was the last time you were in a state of flow, in the zone and totally lost track of time? What were you doing?
  • What topics do you find yourself continuously arguing or defending with others? What beliefs does your stance represent?
  • Out of all your current work roles, what would you gladly do for free?
  • What do your friends always tell you you’d be good at, that you should do for a living (i.e. “he’d make a great…)? If you don’t remember, then go ask five of them.
  • What careers do you find yourself dreaming of? What jobs do others have that you wish were yours?
  • What 3–5 dream jobs or businesses can you imagine that would firmly embody your core beliefs about the world?

And finally, don’t go all out at once, start small. Do a patch test first because theory is not the same as practical. You might have read books and done your research, but there is never a guarantee of consumer behaviour. Be ready for the worst but don’t be afraid pushing your business forward and see if it fits well in real circumstances and real markets cause that’s the only way to find out.

And keep some of your resources to rectify your mistakes for round two if things going wrong in the first round and never ever give up!
